February Half Terms

A few years ago a group of Parent Council Chairs were instrumental in bringing about the WHOLE WEEK BREAK in February, it was useful for people wanting to go away.

Highland Council achieved this by putting 3 of the 'In Service' training days in February.

Now they feel that teachers benefit from more training at other times of the year. There is only one 'In Service Day' in February and just 2 days of official policy.

The Group of PC chairs will be discussing with the Director of Education if the whole week break could be achieved in other ways.

One possibility is

  • Kids going to school on either Good Friday or Easter Monday
  • The school year finishing on a Friday not a Thursday

The timetable is published a long way ahead so this would not be implemented until Feb 2017 but we need to know people's opinions now.

Questions

1. Would you like a whole week break in February

2. Are you OK with kids going to school on Good Friday or Easter Monday

3. Are you OK with the school year ending on Friday not Thursday

    1. No - we find a week in February to be far too long if the weather's not great.
    2. no, preferably not
    3. yes, not bothered either way.

    1. Yes the week in February is great if you have kids who enjoy snowsports.
    2. No problems with either good Friday or Easter Monday
    3. No problems with school year ending on a Friday.

2 in service days in September right before the long October break does not seem to make any sense and if the in service days cannot move to Feb, then perhaps they can be accommodated not too close to other holidays or as indicated tacked on the beginning or end of existing ones.
    Thanks
    T

I notice the 2 September days feature in 2015 plans as well. The fact these are not tacked on to a holiday is something on which we will focus, thanks for the prompting. Around the Highlands from what I hear so far opinion is evenly divided amongst people who do and don't like a full week in February
